Commonly asked questions about dosing systems

What is a dosing system? +

A dosing system is a controlled weighing and feeding solution used to dispense precise quantities of material into a production process. The purpose of a dosing system is to ensure that ingredients, additives, or active components are delivered accurately, repeatably, and in the correct ratio, either as part of a batch process or as a continuous operation. In industrial applications, a dosing system typically combines a weighing unit with load cells, a feeding mechanism such as dosing screws, and control electronics that regulate and verify the dosing process. Dosing systems are used where even small deviations in quantity can affect product quality, regulatory compliance, or production costs, such as in processing industries, agriculture, chemical production, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

What is a dosing management system? +

A dosing management system is the control and supervision layer that manages how one or multiple dosing systems operate within a production process. While the dosing system performs the physical weighing and feeding of materials, the dosing management system coordinates recipes, monitors performance, and ensures traceability and documentation. In advanced installations, the dosing management system handles setpoints, recipe management, real-time monitoring, data logging, and integration with PLCs and higher-level automation systems. Together, the dosing system and the dosing management system ensure accurate formulations, reduced waste, and stable, repeatable production.

What is the difference between nano, micro, and medi dosing systems? +

The difference between nano, micro, and medi dosing systems lies primarily in capacity, accuracy, and application requirements. Nano dosing systems are designed for very small quantities and high static accuracy, typically used for vitamins, micronutrients, and active ingredients where precision is critical. Micro dosing systems handle moderate quantities and are suitable for applications requiring a balance between capacity and accuracy. Medi dosing systems are designed for larger batch quantities and are used where higher throughput is required while maintaining controlled and accurate dosing. Each system type is selected based on material characteristics, required accuracy, and the role of the ingredient in the final product.

What dosing accuracy can be achieved with Jesma dosing systems? +

The achievable dosing accuracy depends on the selected scale size, system capacity, dosing screw configuration, and control system efficiency. Jesma nano dosing scales are designed for very high static accuracy when dosing low quantities. Micro dosing scales operate with high static accuracy for moderate batch sizes, while medi dosing scales handle larger quantities with controlled and repeatable weighing performance. The overall system accuracy is influenced by the application of coarse and fine dosing screws and the efficiency of the control system.

How do Jesma dosing systems minimize cross contamination? +

Jesma dosing systems are designed to minimize cross contamination through mechanical design and system layout. Nano and micro dosing scales use weighing bins that are fully emptied between batches using pneumatic movement and vibration to ensure no residual material remains. In addition, systems can be designed with separate hoppers and dosing screws for individual materials, allowing clear identification and reducing the risk of material mixing. Smooth internal surfaces, inspection doors, and easy access for cleaning further support hygienic operation and safe product changeover.

How do I choose the right dosing scale for my application? +

Selecting the right dosing scale depends on several factors, including required batch size, dosing accuracy, material flow properties, and available installation space. Free-flowing materials can often be handled with simpler discharge solutions, while poor flowing or sticky materials may require mechanical scrapers, agitator screws, or specific dosing screw designs. Jesma dosing systems are modular and can be adapted to different silo sizes, dosing screws, and discharge solutions, allowing the system to be configured according to the specific application and prepared for future expansion.

Can Jesma dosing systems handle poor flowing or difficult materials? +

Yes, Jesma dosing systems are designed to handle both free-flowing and poor flowing materials. Systems can be equipped with conical discharges for gravity-fed materials or mechanical scraper bottoms with agitator screws to prevent bridging and ensure consistent material flow. Dosing screws with center shafts, progressive windings, and pneumatic closing caps help maintain even dosing flow and prevent afterflow, which is especially important when handling sticky, hygroscopic, or difficult materials.

Are Jesma dosing systems batch-based or continuous? +

Jesma dosing systems are primarily designed for gravimetric batch dosing, where ingredients and additives are weighed accurately before being discharged into the next process step. Depending on application requirements, the systems can also support static, dynamic, and continuous weighing principles as part of a complete production setup. The dosing concept is selected based on product characteristics, process requirements, and desired level of automation.

Can dosing systems be supplied as standalone units or as complete systems? +

Jesma dosing scales can be supplied as standalone units or integrated into complete dosing systems. Complete systems may include silos, dosing screws, weighing units, control systems, platforms, and supporting steel structures. This modular approach allows customers to start with individual components and later expand to a full dosing solution as production requirements evolve.

Are Jesma dosing systems ATEX compliant? +

Jesma nano and micro dosing systems are developed with electrical and pneumatic components located outside the dust zone and can be supplied in compliance with ATEX requirements, depending on project specifications. ATEX suitability is evaluated based on the complete system design, material properties, and installation environment.

How is cleaning and maintenance handled in dosing systems? +

Jesma dosing systems are designed according to a simple and robust principle that supports easy cleaning and maintenance. Inspection doors, removable weighing bins, and accessible components allow operators to perform cleaning and service tasks efficiently. The modular system design and smooth internal surfaces help reduce downtime and support stable operation in continuous production environments.
