Optimizing utilization by ensuring correct measuring.

Orsted, Denmark (prev. Dong Energy) Herning combined heat and power plant, a power station, contacted Jesma to find a solution to a challenge with controlling the amount of wood pellets let into the boiler.

Because of the troubles with the process control and wrong measuring of wood pellets, the amount of air blown into the boiler was not correct thus resulting in lower utilization of the biomass as well as enhancing the risk of emission. Part of the issue was also that the current measuring system did not reach Orsted quality standards.

Testing to ensure optimal choice of weighing solution

Closely cooperating Jesma and Orsted found and tested a Jesma solution during a period of several months.

The challenge we had was very important for us to resolve and we had several incentives to go into cooperation with Jesma in Vejle. During the entire process we had a good experience with the cooperation with Jesma. They had a very professional approach to the project. When there was a need for another solution, they were always flexible and proactive.

With the current solution we have solved all the challenges we had with the process management of the boiler, and we have reach all the accuracy requirements Ørsted have to this process. All in all, we are very pleased with the cooperation with Jesma.

The chosen solution was a JesBelt-A, that during the test period showed to have no issues obtaining the accuracy needed.

The test process all showed that the JesBelt-A faced a challenge in the enclosure due to slight positive pressure in the area, whereas the JesBelt-A standardly is designed to run in area with a negative pressure. We learned from the testing process and used the knowledge to improve the solution.

Jesma delivered a JesBelt-A dustproof version adapted for the surroundings with a service agreement for regular service, and the solution is now implemented in 3 lines at the Herning CHP plant.

Regarding service and calibration, we have made a service agreement with Jesma for regular service on the weighers every 6 months. The technicians from Jesma makes a visual control of the weighers, along with a calibration test to ensure that the weighing is still correct.

This provides us with the security we need to control the processes, which are very important to us at Ørsted.
